The unemployment rate for people 25 to 54 is 10.1%, down from 10.6% in February.
But the percentage of workers with jobs fell to 2.5% in August from 3.9% a year earlier.
It was also down from 4.9%, the highest rate since October 2010.
The jobless rate for the younger group also fell from 7.4% in September to 7.1% in October.
But for the group with college degrees, the jobless number rose to 5.6%, up from 5.2% a month earlier.
